Meet Your Team in Topeka, KS
In 2012, Carlson Financial’s first office opened in Topeka, Kansas, the city where Carl, and his wife, Kay Lyn, raised their three children. The people we have met and the relationships we have made there will always hold a special place in our hearts. Carl is the Featured Financial Resource for WIBW Channel 13, with regular appearances on the Red Couch with Ralph Hipp as well as Carlson Financial Minutes. Our office at 12th and Oakley is an iconic Westboro building, built in 1930 as a Kansas Power & Light electrical substation. The eclectic Spanish-style building was vacant for more than ten years when Carlson Financial moved in, renovated, and made it our own.
Financial Advisor, CPA
Scott was born and raised in Topeka, Kansas. He’s a fourth-generation Washburn Rural Junior Blue and a proud Washburn Ichabod. He married his high school sweetheart, Kelsey, in 2015 and considers this to be by far his greatest accomplishment! Kelsey is a middle school teacher in the Washburn Rural district. After graduating from Washburn University with a degree in Accounting and Finance, Scott began his career in financial and SEC reporting at FHLBank Topeka. He then spent four years at Westar Energy in the Corporate Finance department. There he gained capital markets experience, coordinating with investment bankers, legal teams, and trustees on debt and equity issuances. For the last year, Scott was responsible for the monthly reporting of current and projected earnings results to the officer team. While he enjoyed his work at Westar, Scott was missing the impact he could have by working with individuals. He’s had a passion for personal finance since college, making him a perfect fit for Carlson Financial. Scott is a Certified Public Accountant.

A Washburn University Alumnus and Topeka native, Brett enjoys spending time outside of work with his wife, Ashlee, and their three children.
Senior Wealth Advisor, CLU, CEO
Carl brings more than 25 years of experience in the financial industry, including 10 years of experience in wealth management and insurance. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Houston. Carl founded Carlson Financial after becoming frustrated with the lack of honesty and transparency he saw in the financial services industry. His goal was and continues to be to put the client’s (and not the company’s) interests first. He makes it his personal mission to maximize our clients’ incomes while protecting and preserving their nest eggs. Carl is the featured financial resource for four TV stations and is a frequent speaker; covering an array of financial topics, issues, and opportunities for those nearing and in retirement. He and his wife, Kay Lyn, have been married for over 35 years and they have three children: Emily, Anna and Ethan.
Chief Investment Officer
Dan has over 25 years of experience in market analysis and system development for business finance, marketing, data systems and investments. He graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. While managing his own investments business, he innovated a system to measure the impact that market momentum and trends have on price in the financial markets. He believes these technical indicators give us a picture of the fundamentals and psychology that drive the share price. Dan and his wife, Penny, live in Topeka, Kansas, and have been married over 20 years. They have three children and enjoy family summer vacations to the beach and winter snow skiing in Colorado.
Emily has been with Carlson Financial since 2016, but she has been a Carlson since 1989. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Spanish and Women’s Studies from Kansas State University. Emily oversees setup and coordination of all Carlson Financial events; from dinner seminars to Wine & Wisdom client events. Her creative design and attention to detail make each event a signature Carlson Financial experience for our clients and guests. When she is not working, Emily enjoys reading, shopping, and spending time with her family and friends.
Kristen was born and raised in Olathe, Kansas and moved to Topeka in 2016 to begin a life with her fiancé, Jackson. Throughout high school, she developed a passion for customer service while working in the restaurant industry and volunteering at soup kitchens. She also worked in young childhood development before joining Carlson Financial. Kristen is the first smiling face our clients and guests see at our office. On a day-to-day basis you can find her scheduling and coordinating appointments and events, managing documents and performing multifaceted general office support. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, baking, family trips to Table Rock Lake in the summer, fishing with her grandpa, and cheering on the Royals, Chiefs, and Jayhawks.
